Why Natalie Portman Won't Be in Thor: Ragnarok?

Actress Natalie Portman has made it quite clear that she’s no real desire to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has explained how the MCU intends to explain her absence.

The first two Thor movies revolved around the God of Thunder's relationship with Jane Foster, but now there’s some bad news for fans of the couple, and it’s a small spoiler for Thor: Ragnarok: in that film, the couple has broken up.

"He’s off exploring the universe, still trying to police it and control the mayhem," Chris Hemsworth says of what Thor has been up to since we last saw him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "But he’s certainly enjoying being a drifter, being a solo cowboy out there." But he won't stay solo for long. The arrival of a strong and confident warrior named Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) on the planet Sakaar gives the God of Thunder an equal to confide in. Not that Valkyrie is going to give a crap about the Asgardian prince.

"We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior," adds Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about what's next for the God of Thunder. "Valkyrie is trying to not embrace any sort of Asgardian heritage that she has. Thor thinks maybe that will create a bond between them and, on the contrary, she wants to forget it all entirely."

Last year Portman revealed she wouldn't be appearing in Ragnarok, or any other film in the MCU anytime soon, saying as far as she knew at the time, she's done.

Kevin Feige previously addressed Portman's absence from Ragnarok, saying there are "many reasons" why she won't appear in Ragnarok, including the fact that most of the film doesn't take place on Earth.

Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, and Cate Blanchett, Thor: Ragnarok will be released in UK cinemas on October 27, 2017 before opening in US theatres on November 3, 2017.
