The Logan Scene That Made Both Hugh Jackman And Patrick Stewart Cry

Let's face it: holding back tears while watching was an incredibly challenging task.

Logan marked Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine after playing the character for almost two decades. As can be expected, the film featured a number of moving and heartbreaking moments as fans said farewell to Jackman’s incarnation of the X-Men hero. Unsurprisingly, making and viewing the film was an emotional experience for the stars as well, particularly for Jackman and longtime co-star Patrick Stewart, who has played Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise since the first film was released in 2000. Speaking at a screening of Logan Noir in NYC, (via THR), Jackman revealed that when watching the film for the first time, during Logan's Berlin premiere, he and Patrick Stewart both wept at a very specific scene: the very final shot, when X-23/Laura and her fellow mutants have buried the fallen Wolverine. As the group of young mutants walks away, Laura stops and turns the cross marking Logan's on its side, creating the iconic "X" for the X-Men.

As Jackman recalls: "When I read it, I thought 'that's beautiful.' It seemed very poetic on the page. And when I saw it, I cried. I sat next to Patrick Stewart. We saw it for the first time, and both of us wept.”

Jackman also expressed satisfaction in the way the film allowed Logan's story to come full circle, and complimented James Mangold's ability to be patient with his vision, which ultimately allowed him to pull that off:

"There's something so patient and courageous in a filmmaker to allow everything to culminate in that one moment."

Stewart previously hinted at this interaction back in March when he talked about watching the film with Jackman in Berlin. “…at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this,” he said. “And then I realized I had just done the same thing.”

Though Stewart has indicated he’d be willing to play Charles Xavier on the FX series Legion, which follows his son David Haller, or in Deadpool, he’s also asserted that Logan will be his last film in the role. While there’s a chance he might return in the future, he isn’t currently scheduled to play the part again. However, there’s no ambiguity about whether or not Jackman will return to the role as he has continually said that Logan is his final appearance as the character, unless Fox and Marvel ever come to terms for an Avengers/X-Men crossover, that is.
