In a recent interview, James Gunn confirmed that a third Guardians of the Galaxy is going to happen, just maybe without him.

Speaking to Complex in an interview published this week, Gunn discussed his new flick The Belko Experiment, which evolved into talk about his role at Marvel. When asked about plans regarding a possible third installment, the Guardians director was to-the-point.

"There will be a Guardians 3, that's for sure. We're trying to figure it out. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do really, that's all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I'm going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I'm just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks."

Gunn wrapped production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 late last year and is currently promoting The Belko Experiment, a horror movie he wrote. Gunn also directed the first Guardians movie, and has been the franchise’s most avid fan on social media. The director added that while he isn’t sure if he’s going to be involved in the third movie, he is working with the Russo brothers to make sure the inclusion of the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War makes sense.

“I gave [the Russo brothers] tons of advice on how to direct the actors, talked to them a lot during the shooting, and talked to the actors a lot during the shooting to make sure that the Guardians are staying authentic.”

Marvel CEO Kevin Feige confirmed last year that while they weren’t looking past 2020 at what was on the feature-film schedule, Guardians 3 was definitely a priority. It’s unclear if all of the five main actors will be returning for the third installment.

There is still plenty of time and if Marvel really wants to keep Gunn, they will find a way. But for now, we can all enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it opens May 5, 2017.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana as Gamora; Dave Bautista as Drax; Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker as Yondu; Karen Gillan as Nebula; and Sean Gunn as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell.
