'Batman' Director Matt Reeves Won't Use Ben Affleck's Script

And it means that the movie script will be starting over from scratch.

After making his debut as Batman in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice last year, Ben Affleck signed on to write and direct his own standalone Batman film, which he was co-writing with DC Films head honcho Geoff Johns. Then, back in January, Affleck suddenly stepped down from his directing duties and left the director’s chair open for Reeves to step in. Despite rumors suggesting that Affleck will be recast as Batman following his appearance in Snyder’s Justice League later this year, he is scheduled to reprise his role in Reeves’ upcoming film, though it looks like the story that he wrote with Johns will no longer be used.

“No [we won’t be using that], it’s a new story,” Reeves said on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.”

Earlier this year, Forbes reported the script would “undergo substantial changes and possible/probably another full rewrite,” but this is the first time someone directly involved has confirmed that. This might not be good news for Joe Manganiello, who was supposed to play the villain Deathstroke. Reeves has described his take on The Batman as a noir driven, detective version.

Reeves went on to qualify that, despite signing on to helm The Batman, he’s been otherwise focused purely on his work on War for the Planet of the Apes and there’s nothing further to report on The Batman at this stage.

“Truly, I have not been doing anything but working on Planet of the Apes,” said Reeves. “We are just starting [on The Batman] so there’s really nothing to say about anything.”

We may hear more about The Batman next week when Warner Bros. brings the Justice League and Aquaman casts to San Diego Comic-Con. But until then, the film doesn’t even have a release date.

Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes opens this week in North America and the UK, and later this month in Australia. We’ll next see Affleck as Batman in Justice League this November.
